The third of the featured composers in our “Autumn Leaves” concerts on the 20th and 26th October.
Johannes Brahms (1833–1897), one of the towering figures of the Romantic era, is celebrated for his mastery of both large-scale symphonic works and intimate chamber music blending the rigour of classical forms with the emotional depth and lyrical intensity characteristic of his time. Born in Hamburg and later settling in Vienna, Brahms developed a distinctive voice that honoured the traditions of composers such as Beethoven and Schubert, while still pushing the boundaries of harmonic and structural complexity.
Though he is perhaps best known for his symphonies and piano concertos, Brahms also had a deep affinity for vocal music. His choral works are filled with rich harmonies and contrapuntal ingenuity, often exploring themes of spirituality, mortality, and human connection. His ability to create profound emotional impact through music that is both technically brilliant and deeply expressive is one of the hallmarks of his enduring legacy.
As part of our programme, we will be performing Brahms’ Fest-und Gedenksprüche, Op.109 III “Wo ist ein so herrlich Volk”, a stunning example of his late choral style. Written for double choir, this piece showcases Brahms’ sophisticated use of counterpoint and his sensitivity to the text, creating music that is both majestic and intimate. While the piece reflects his deep understanding of German choral tradition, it also carries a timeless emotional resonance.
