The second of the featured composers in our “Autumn Leaves” concerts on the 20th and 26th October.
Josef Rheinberger (1839–1901) was a German composer, organist, and revered teacher. Born in Liechtenstein and spending much of his career in Munich, Rheinberger is renowned for his rich and expressive Romantic style, combining the elegance of Classical form with the emotional depth of the Romantic era. Though his organ music is perhaps his most famous legacy, his choral works are equally cherished for their lyrical beauty and harmonic sophistication.
In our concerts, we will be performing Rheinberger’s 4 Motets Op.133, which exemplify his mastery of choral composition. Written towards the end of his career, these motets reflect his deep connection to sacred music, offering a blend of serene spirituality and lush, flowing melodies. Rheinberger’s choral music, particularly these motets, showcases his gift for creating intricate polyphony, while maintaining clarity and balance in each voice part.
Throughout his life, Rheinberger held influential positions, including professor of composition at the Munich Conservatory, where his students included many future luminaries. His work left a lasting impression on both the sacred and secular music worlds, and his 4 Motets Op.133 stand as a testament to his ability to write music that is both reverent and profoundly moving.
