“Messa di Gloria” – Puccini

Programme Notes:
Puccini’s exhilarating Messa di Gloria, written when he was just 20, combines the excitement of youth with the fabulous melodic writing to be found later in his operas. There’s barely space for listeners to pause for breath in between one glorious tune and the next. Accompanied by Petersfield organist Mark Dancer, the soloist in the work is Jon English, whose appearances in the nation’s finest opera houses is a testament to his wonderful voice. To balance this delectable Italian work, The Renaissance Choir will also sing sensuous sounds from the English Romantic composers, Stanford, Pearsall and Wood. The programme will also comprise: Mealor – O Vos Omnes. Pearsall – Lay a Garland. Pearsall – Great god of love. Wood – Hail Gladdening Light. Stanford – Coelos Ascendit. Stanford – Beati Quorum Via. Stanford – Justorum animae.
