The Renaissance Choir has a well-earned reputation for its sublime sound and adventurous repertoire
Thinking of joining us? Most of all, we look for voices which blend. Our sound is similar to cathedral choirs, so heavy voices, operatic singing or noticeable vibrato are unsuitable for our choir.
You can find current vacancies are at the bottom of this page. Even if there isn’t a vacancy, we’re always keen to hear from singers who can sight-read, hold their own musical line, and would be prepared to sing the occasional solo or sing in a semi-chorus.
While our favourite music is Renaissance polyphony, we also perform more contemporary works. We love to sing Byrd, Tallis, Victoria, and Palestrina, and later composers including Bach, Mozart, Poulenc, Whitacre, and Lauridsen. Read more on our About page.
The choir regularly travels abroad and has performed in many inspiring venues including Notre Dame in Paris, the Cathedral in Santiago de Compostela and St. Peter’s Basilica, Rome.
In May 2022 we plan to perform Wells Cathedral and Glastonbury on tour. In May 2023 we plan to perform in Dresden and Leipzig.
Rehearsals are generally from 7.30pm to 9.30pm on Fridays at the Emsworth Community Centre, PO10 7DF, and some of us visit a pub afterwards.
We encourage singers to attend as many rehearsals as possible and to be prepared to put in additional time at home for note learning. However, we have our own home-grown midi file page to help members to learn the current repertoire.
The subscription for the 2019-20 season is £129 which can also be paid termly. A reduced subscription may be requested in any case of financial hardship and requests are treated in complete confidence.
Entry is on completion of an informal audition with our Musical Director.
